HID Global Sues WaveLynx Over Patent Infringement
WaveLynx, which was founded by former HID employees, is accused of infringing on a patent related to an antenna array for RFID readers.

WILMINGTON, Del. — HID Global and its parent company, ASSA ABLOY, have filed a lawsuit against WaveLynx Technologies for patent infringement.
The lawsuit states that WaveLynx, a competitor of HID, is infringing on the company’s patent, entitled, “Antenna Array For An RFID Reader Compatible With Transponders Operating At Different Carrier Frequencies,” (the ’862 patent).
WaveLynx was founded and is led by former HID employees, including Hugo Wendling (CEO), Mike Conlin (COO) and Mike Malone (senior product architect).
HID says WaveLynx has known of the patent since at least March 16, 2016, because that is when the company reached out to HID “to discuss licensing the appropriate IP around LF & HF combined readers.”
HID believes WaveLynx sought to license the patent because it was aware that its own products already infringed upon the patent. However, WaveLynx never obtained the license.
According to the lawsuit, “The ’862 Patent generally discloses, among other things, a RFID reader that includes at least two reader antennas that operate at different carrier frequencies. The reader antennas are arranged in a configuration that optimizes performance of the RFID system, while maintaining a compact size.”
The WaveLynx Ethos Reader line is an example of the company’s products infringing on HID’s patent. The lawsuit states that certain models of Ethos Readers interoperate with WaveLynx’s MyPass Mobile, which is functionally-related to HID’s products. WaveLynx’s Key Management solution is also cited as being functionally-related.
“On information and belief, WaveLynx sells Accused Products bundled with the MyPass Mobile or Key Management services. On information and belief, WaveLynx charges a price premium for the Accused Products bundled with the MyPass Mobile or Key Management services,” the lawsuit states.
WaveLynx is also accused of actively and continuing to “induce others, including third party vendors, who customize, use, and resell the Accused Products in the United States, to directly infringe claims of the ’862 patent.”
