Motorola Solutions Acquires Openpath to Expand Security Portfolio

Openpath’s platform focuses on integrated technology to provide frictionless mobile access control and scalable Cloud-based solutions.

CHICAGO — Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Openpath Security, a Cloud-based mobile access control provider, for undisclosed terms.

Openpath Co-Founders James Segil and Alex Kazerani spent two years of intensive market research and proptech development before launching their Cloud-managed access control startup in 2018.

Based in Los Angeles, the company’s platform focuses on integrated technology to provide frictionless mobile access and scalable Cloud-based solutions that can also be integrated with legacy systems. Leveraging the systems integration channel, Openpath’s platform is retrofitted into existing properties across a range of market niches, as well as into new construction.

The company’s wares — which can supplement or replace physical badges with a digital badge stored on a smartphone — are striking a chord with stakeholders in the built world. Openpath claims to unlock more than five million doors per month, and last July the company closed a Series C funding round of $36 million (bringing total funding to $63 million to date).

“Securing businesses around the world has never been more critical,” states Greg Brown, chairman and CEO, Motorola Solutions. “This acquisition enables us to combine the power of video security and access control together, providing unprecedented situational awareness, where every physical entry and exit is authenticated and recorded with access control and video.”

The combined leadership of Motorola Solutions and Openpath in video security and access control will allow Motorola Solutions to build on its extensive footprint in supporting enterprise customers with an unparalleled security solution, according to a press release.

“With Motorola Solutions, we will continue to pioneer the future of the access control industry,” Kazerani, Openpath’s CEO, states. “We couldn’t be more excited to work together in bringing best-in-class, innovative solutions to organizations around the world to make their business a safer place to be.”

The acquisition is the latest in a series of transactions that Motorola Solutions has completed since acquiring Avigilon in 2018. The company has continued to expand its portfolio with deals for WatchGuard, IndigoVision and Pelco.

Also in 2019, Motorola acquired VaaS International Holdings. The company’s image capture and analysis platform, which includes fixed and mobile license plate reader cameras driven by machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), provides vehicle location data to public safety and commercial customers.

Motorola Solutions expects to close the Openpath transaction by the end of the month.
