Report: G4S Made ‘Clerical Error’ in Evaluating Orlando Shooter’s Psychological Test

Omar Mateen had listed the wrong name for the psychologist who evaluated a mandatory test to determine if he should be authorized to carry a firearm.

G4S, the security company that hired Omar Mateen, reportedly made a “clerical error” as it related to the psychology test he passed before being hired in 2007. Mateen shot and killed 49 people at an Orlando nighclub, police say, marking the most deadly mass shooting in American history.

The Wall Street Journal reports the global security firm listed the wrong name of the psychologist who evaluated the test Mateen had to take in order to carry a firearm. Mateen’s document listed Dr. Carol Nudelman as the psychologist who had evaluated the test. However, after Mateen’s work file was further examined after the shootings, Dr. Nudelman (now Dr. Blumberg) said she had not evaluated tests for the security company since 2005.

“Dr. Nudelman’s name appeared on the license as scoring the exam; it was a clerical error,” G4S said.

G4S said Mateen’s psychology test was evaluated by Headquarters for Psychological Evaluation, a third-party vendor. The firm reported Mateen was a “favorable recommendation for employment,” the WSJ report stated.

The report added that G4S did not conduct a psychological evaluation of Mateen in 2013 after the FBI investigated him after telling co-workers he had ties to terrorist groups. The company said it does not conduct such tests after a security guard is hired.

“It is not our policy — nor the policy of any security provider or law enforcement agency that we are aware of — to demand psychological exams in such situations,” the security company said in a statement.
